WE WILL BREAK YOUR CHAINS 2020 Size: 38cm x 50cm Edition: 5 Stock: Southbank Smooth 160gsm Process: Letterpress, collagraph This work explores semantics and the speed with which seemingly neutral language can move sequentially into a clear judgement. It started with imagery created from a collagraph matrix and Monoblox shapes. That imagery generated a simple phrase - "symbols trapped in repeat motion" - which was printed and overprinted repeatedly. That phrase was then put through online translation software from English into five other languages in sequence (and chosen at random), before being rendered back into English. This process was repeated four times using each new phrase. The result is the four different phrases that are overlaid onto the original: "caught in repeated movements", "symptoms of imbalance appear", "signs of prejudice", "signs of inequality". Created for the Reverting to Type exhibition, London, 2020/21. Many thanks to New North Press for including my work in the show. +++ Please get in touch to ask about purchasing this print. |
