'Open House'
Exhibition & residency by David Armes, including a collaboration with Turvey World Dance company Huddersfield, UK Residency: May to June 2016 Exhibition: June to August 2016 +++ a ROTOR collaboration with Huddersfield Art Gallery East Street Arts University of Huddersfield's School of Art, Design and Architecture |
'Open House' was an artist-in-residence that functioned as a durational exhibition. I took over a gallery at Huddersfield Art Gallery for three months over spring and summer 2016, creating a workspace that slowly transformed into an exhibition, with the process open to public view at all times.
The commission centred around notions of wayfinding and ownership to consider access and engagement between visitors to the gallery and working artists. I established a temporary print studio in a gallery, using interactions and conversations with visitors as source material for printed paper sculptures and 'scrolls' that intervened in the space. There was also a collaboration with Turvey World Dance company who used the installations and texts as the starting point for a new piece of performance work. The video clips below show elements of the rehearsals and opening night performance. |
